Dante is a oldstyle typeface designed in by Giovanni Marderstieg in the 1950’s for his private press, Oficina Bodini in Italy. Inspiration for the typeface was taken from the humanastic cuts of Francesco Griffo in the italian renaissance. As it was designed to be an excessively elegant and legible typeface, and based off old italic cuts, I decided to give my poster a very regal, renaissance feel. I used a variety of characters to create a pattern to emulate renaissance/victorian italian design work and show off the typeface’s elegantly crafted forms. I took my potential color pallet from a renaissance painting, but settled on maroon as most aesthetically pleasing. I set my information in a style similar to old press releases and metal press documents. My goal was to give the poster an antique and regal demeanor, much like the typeface itself.
